South Carolina politics, from the State House to Horry County

South Carolina holds an early spot on the presidential primary calendar, a Republican-majority legislature and a fast-growing coast. That mix brings national attention, heavy ad spending and plenty of claims that need checking.

This section covers statewide races, legislative elections, ballot questions and election procedures. We report what candidates said and did, link filings with the State Election Commission and the State Ethics Commission where they exist, and check claims in campaign ads against the record.

We don't predict winners or endorse anyone. Polls get reported with their sample, dates and margin of error, and never as certainty. Coming up: how to get started researching a candidate's record, and the best first stops for South Carolina election information.
